"Quaran-cleaning" with Marin

Now, more than ever, with little time outside of our homes and plenty of reasons to feel anxious, we need our homes to be our sanctuaries. Strangely, the cause of our current pain can also be a kind of cure. Just when we most need order and beauty in our spaces, we also have the dedicated time to create them.

On a March 2020 Zoom call, I outlined the 3 steps to tackling any organizing project:

  • sort - Put your blinders on and simply sort, and sub-sort, items into categories

  • purge - “Shop your closet” and eliminate the rest, leaving space for a little sentimentality

  • store -Plan before you make a move. Ask not, “what can I put here?” but “Where should this go?”

We discussed the importance of developing clear priorities with your family before beginning the task of organizing.

Guests shared words of wisdom:

  • Drink the good wine. Life is short and every day is precious. So, what are we waiting for? Enjoy the things you love now rather than saving them for a “special” day.

  • Make an “apoca-list” of all the food and other items you already have at home. Because you never know what you have until you clean your house! Treasures may abound. A roll of toilet paper, a bottle of hand sanitizer, some old prescription meds…are only of use if you know where they are.

  • Just about everything can be categorized as either replaceable or irreplaceable. Hang tight to the irreplaceable and let go of the rest.
